今年やっとはじめてグレインジャーカウンティーの全国に有名になりつつあるトマトフェスティバルに行ってきました！スペインのトマトフェスティバルの影響を少しだけ受けていて、(もしかしたらまねしたのかも？) トマトの投げあいなどが行われます。
“From the Interstate 40, Rutledge Pike (rote11 north) all the way to Grainger County High School.” I had that in my head, but I didn’t know how long that was going to be… I had to stop at a gas station (seems like middle of nowhere) and ask a big lady with missing teeth for the direction, but she turned out very nice, and I was just 5 miles away… I drove about 20~30miles from the interstate on a very country road to get there.
「インターステート ４０からラトレッジパイクを高校までひたすら北へ」と言う情報だけで行ったので途中心配になりガソリンスタンドで止まって聞く破目に。大きいユニフォームを着たお姉ちゃんがタバコを外で吸っていて前歯が2,3本なくちょっと見た目怖かったけど聞いてみたら全然親切で｢後5マイルほど｣と教えてくれた。

After long drive, I started to see cars parked both side of the street! However, if you want to park at a private lot near the site, it is $3. There is a free lot too, but it was full and waiting.
長いこと走っていると両脇に車が止まっているのが見えてきた。
遠いパーキングはただだけどもうちょっと近くに止めたければ、＄３で近くの空き地に止められます。
This was bigger festival than I expected! As soon as I got in, (by the way, there is no admission fee) I find FRESH vegetables and fruits! I already love this festival!

I haven’t seen bags of cabbages like that, and I was wondering who needs so many cabbages. Well, I asked the question and the lady told me that people CAN them. I forgot I was in the country side!
こんなにキャベツがたくさん。どうするのだろうと考えて、最終的におばさんに聞いてみたら調理してビンか缶に詰めて置いておくらしい。さすが田舎！自分で缶詰め作るんや！
You can buy this for $18. I can’t eat that many, but they have smaller sizes too.

Grainger County is famous for Tomatoes, so there are so many kinds of tomatoes to chose from.

There were several tents for shows. The one I saw was the line dance. I teach them, so I had to check them out :) I loved the hand written program, too.
パフォーマンスはラインダンスみたい。ラインダンスは振り付けがあって、同じ踊りを(長さは短い)何回も繰り返し踊る。大体カントリーミュージックで踊る。手書きのプログラムがなんだかかわいい
Music were everywhere, but mainly country or blue grass. I love sound of the music.
いろんな催し物が散らばって行われている。さすがにカントリー、音楽はブルーグラス系が主。
The art show was very small. Few good pieces.
アート賞は小さかった。作品は学生の物が多いのかな?
There is no festival without the classic cars in America… I think. Owners must be proud of them! I like the look of them but with the gas price been the way it is, I need a energy efficient car… All are beautiful and impressive though.
さすがアメリカ。クラッシクカーは欠かさない。全部綺麗に手入れされている。ほしいけど今の世の中燃費がいい車じゃないとね。でもかっこいいなぁ。
I think there are histories in Grainger County. I wanted to know why they dressed like that and all, but it seems like they will talk forever… so I just took pictures and left.

昔ながらのアイスクリームメーカー。本当は手で混ぜるんだけどモーターが付いてるのでその分楽に早くできるのだろう。手作りは本当においしいけど＄4はちょっと高くない?

アップルバターはアップルジャムみたいだけど作り方が違うのかな? 詳しくは知らないけどおいしい。この地域ではみんなパンかビスケットにつけてたべる。おいしいけど、一人用にしてはビンが大きいから、今回はやめときます。

甘い紅茶はこの辺の地域の人が大好きな夏の飲み物。でもお砂糖を何百グラムと入れるので本当に甘い! 私は飲めないぐらい甘いです。

昔ながらの田舎の食べ物ビーンスープとコーンブレッド。ヘルシーだし食べとこうか? でも食べに来たのはこれじゃないし… 結局買わず。
But, I am hungry… then, I spot $1 Mater sandwich. It won’t hurt my calories so much or bank! So I got it. It was just a couple of slices of tomatoes and a big slice of little too thick onion… I add mayo on it and being nervous about onion, which might give me a hurt burn or bitter taste, I bit on it… Oh, it was so good! I guess when ingredients are fresh, it doesn’t matter how you cook.
でもちょっとお腹空いたしこれはたったの＄1だったから買っちゃいました。単に白いパンにトマトのスライスと生のちょっと厚切り過ぎるたまねぎを自分でマヨネーズで味付けしたサンドイッチ。これがまたおいしくってびっくり! たまねぎも全然辛くなくこれはお買い得だった。
Before I go home, I had to eat one thing. And I finally found it!
これが今日食べに来た物。グリーントマトフライ。
I don’t usually choose to eat fried green tomatoes/maters in the restaurant, but I had to today since this was in tomato festival. It was $4 for 8 slices. I shouldn’t eat them all, so I ate 2, and took the rest to my friends who couldn’t go. The taste is like, the fried cone meal with a little bit of acidic flavor from Tomato… It’s not delicious to me; however, it satisfied my mind.
グリーントマトフライはこの辺りではレストランでも出されるぐらい有名というか昔からある食べ物です。自分的にはあまり好きではないのですが、今日はせっかくなので、買いました。一人で8枚も食べるのは健康に良くないので2枚食べて後は来られなかった友達におみやげ。コーンミール(とうもろこしの粉)であげた衣の味がメインで、ちょっとトマトの酸味がして、さくっ、グニャッとした食感です。おいしかったと言うより気分的にただ納得したと言う感じ。
When I got to my friend’s home, the fried green tomato was all wet and stuck together. Looked totally different from when I bought them. I left good ones to my friend and took the crushed ones home. I toasted again and ate them with ketchup. It was better on the site. So, don’t take the fried green tomatoes home!
ちなみにもって帰ったトマトはぐちゃぐちゃで全部1つに引っ付いてしまって、買ったときとは全然姿が変わってしまっていました。でもトースターに入れてちゃんと捨てずに食べました。でもみなさんは買ってすぐに食べてください。

今日のお買い上げ品
9 peaches (1/2 pound), 8 tomatoes, 2 cucumbers, 2 green papers, 1 squish, and 1 zucchini. Peaches were $3. The rest was $7.45… I paid $10.50 in order to get $3.05 change back for the rest… First, the girl gave me $2.05. I told her I gave a $10 bill and 50 cents… then, she gave me $3 back… I didn’t want to argue any more, so I just took $3 change. I had to write this because I get this kind of problems all the time in America. Anyway, I paid $10.50 for everything. I think that is a great deal!!! I am so excited to eat them!
これが今日の収穫。ももは9個で＄3。他は全部(トマト8個、きゅうり2本、アメリカのピーマン2個、ズッキーニ1本、スクアッシュ1本)で＄7.45。＄7.45のお会計のとき＄10.50出したら、＄2.05のおつりが来て、＄10.50出したんだけどと言い返したら次は＄3のおつりが出て、もう言い返すのがめんどくさいので、3ドルだけとって帰った。アメリカはこういうことが多い。相手の算数の弱さに＄1損したこともある。何で引き算弱いのかなあ? まあでも全部で＄10.50良い収穫でした!
